Setting long-term net-zero emissions targets is good.

But long-term targets need to be accompanied by aggressive 5-10 year emissions reduction targets - otherwise they can be meaningless.

As the #ScienceBasedTargets initiative says: “less net, more zero.” sciencebasedtargets.org/blog/s

In the Netherlands, police harasses young climate demonstrators at home to find out what kind of actions are planned.

When farmers this summer blocked half the country with tractors, dumped and lighted rubbish on roads, rammed the entrance of local government buildings, threatened the people who had to clean the rubbish they left - surprise, they hardly arrested anyone of these violent offenders.

"Anarchism is a definite intellectual current of social thought, whose adherents advocate the abolition of economic monopolies and of all political and social coercive institutions within society. In place of the capitalist economic order, anarchists would have a free association of all productive forces based upon co-operative labour, which would have for its sole purpose the satisfying of the necessary requirements of every member of society. In place of the present national states with their lifeless machinery of political and bureaucratic institutions, anarchists desire a federation of free communities which shall be bound to one another by their common economic and social interests and arrange their affairs by mutual agreement and free contract."

- Rudolf Rocker, 'Anarchism and Anarcho-Syndicalism'

I don't know who needs to hear this but

The postal service exists to deliver letters and parcels to people
Not to make money for shareholders

The transport system exists to move people to where they need to go
Not to make money for shareholders

The water, gas, and electricity supplies exist to provide people vital utilities
Not to make money for shareholders

The healthcare system exists to ensure (and that's ENsure, not INsure) the health of the population
Not to make money for shareholders

Shareholders in vital public services are a vampiric drain on those services

Capitalism is a disease

Today in Labor History November 30, 1930: Mother Jones died, age 100, in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was an organizer or "walking delegate" for the United Mine Workers (UMW), famous for her bravado. When she and 3,000 women were released by a militia after being held all night in McAdoo, Pennsylvania, they marched straight to the hotel housing the soldiers and ate their breakfast. Even well into her 90s, she still roamed through the hills of West Virginia, encouraging miners to organize.

Lots of talk at #COP27 abt #climate #tippingpoints.

A big one #permafrost thaw. Here's why, from my recent Nat Geo piece:

1) 20% of permafrost holds half of Arctic soil carbon, but it's ice-rich and unstable.
2) It escapes as CH4
2) Most #IPCC carbon budgets, don't account for #permafrost.
3) Exception: the 1.5C report. But that didn't acct for that 20%.
4) That means however fast we think we must move to reach a goal (1.5, etc.) we really need to move even faster.

"Miracle" by OceanLab

"Are you hoping for a miracle
As the ice caps melt away?
No use hoping for a miracle
There's a price we'll have to pay"

Teaching is antihierarchy that we witness all the time! By acknowledging a knowledge differential and attempting to bring the other person up to the same level the teacher is actively destroying the power differential granted by their greater knowledge.

We do bits of anarchism every day, yet many still think it is fantasy. I am here to tell you anarchism isn't fantasy, it is the default state of most human interactions and we can use this to shape a better world now!

🚨 Chat monitoring sneaked into Online Safety Bill through back door measure.

The spy clause goes beyond scanning public posts to include messaging platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Signal.

This is a disproportionate expansion in surveillance capacity that puts everyone's privacy at risk.

We urge people in the UK to write to their MP. #BlockTheBill

@RhinosWorryMe I don’t feel qualified to have a view on what activist organisations “should” do, but so long as the government’s position remains unchanged it feels inevitable to me that there may be a move to, um, destructive direct action - not violence against people or intentional “unarmed violence” but “machine breaking” of fossil fuel infrastructure, along the lines of Breton nationalists carefully bloodless bombings before 2000

George #Monbiot's latest column absolutely nails it, a must read (and many, many valuable links):
"From the Amazon to Australia, why is your money funding Earth’s destruction? - Fossil fuels, fisheries and farming: the world’s most destructive industries are protected – and subsidised – by governments"

"jokes" about Romany people and Travellers being "thieves" are never funny. That's racism - and it perpetrates harm through offensive stereotypes towards these Peoples who are still enduring 100s of years of oppression and violence.

And stop using the G word in bios to express how much of a boho whimsical flowerchild you are. You're fucking not Susan, not even if you did once go barefoot at Blues Fest.

Covert racism is far too common amongst centralists and self-appointed progressives.

As a mod, I'm here for you all. And that includes ensuring this Instance is safe for all historically and/or socially marginalised peoples.

Apropos of nothing, here's a reminder of a saying in Germany:
"If there's a Nazi at the dinner table and ten other people are sitting there talking to him, eleven Nazis are having dinner together."

#RepresentativeDemocracyIsNeither

'Representative democracy' is an oxymoron that functions to maintain minority (oligarch) rule.

We the people will not find life, liberty and happiness until we take control.

#DirectDemocracy is the path!

This Tory Govt has had an absurd mental block over onshore wind for a decade. It’s cheap, hugely popular, can strengthen our energy security & help tackle #climateemergency. Pitting onshore against offshore is nonsensical & dangerous - we need both.
